Sleep.
When you go to bed tonight make sure you are sleeping in the dark and I mean proper darkness. Research carried out by National Cancer Institute and National Institute of Environment Health Sciences has shown that there is a link between artificial light at night and breast cancer.
Night-shift workers, such as nurses or air stewardesses, are up to 60 per cent more likely to get breast cancer. Just by staying up late two or three times a week increases your susceptibility.
The use of artificial light at night has also been linked to depression. Falling asleep with the television on or with even a small amount of light from a clock radio or from a street light can be affecting your health.
Research has shown that our ability to think quickly and clearly, solve maths problems, remember details, and perform some physical tasks e.g. driving are diminished when we’re sleep deprived. People who go a very long time without sleeping can become paranoid and hallucinate.
We were designed to sleep at night, when it is totally dark. We produce melatonin which is a hormone that helps us to sleep. The pineal gland, which produces melatonin is sensitive to light and will not produce melatonin in the light. So if you get up in the night and turn on the bathroom light, you will shut down production, probably for the rest of the night. The pineal gland works on the basis that once there is light, that it will be light for many more hours.
There are many homeopathic remedies for insomnia. Just two of these are Arsenicum and Coffea. Arsenicum is worth considering if lack of sleep is due to anxiety or fear and there is a lot of restlessness. Coffea is a useful remedy where there is extreme restlessness and the patient has been over stimulated. If insomnia is a chronic recurring problem visit a registered homeopath for help.
